What is the difference between ball valves and plug valves

A plug valve is a closed or plunger shaped rotary valve that opens or closes by rotating 90 degrees to make the channel port on the valve plug the same or separate from the channel port on the valve body. The shape of the valve plug of a plug valve can be cylindrical or conical. In a cylindrical valve plug, the channel is generally rectangular; In the conical valve plug, the channel is trapezoidal. These shapes make the structure of the plug valve lightweight, but at the same time, they also result in certain losses. Plug valves are suitable for cutting off and connecting media, as well as for diverting flow, but depending on the nature of the application and the erosion resistance of the sealing surface, they can sometimes also be used for throttling. Due to the wiping effect of the movement between the sealing surfaces of the plug valve, which can completely prevent contact with the flowing medium when fully open, it is usually also used for media with suspended particles. Another important feature of the plug valve is its ease of adapting to a multi-channel structure, so that a valve can have two, three, or even four different flow channels. This can simplify the design of the pipeline system, reduce the use of valves, and require some connecting accessories in the equipment.
Plug valve purpose:
Plug valves are widely used in oilfield production, transportation, and refining equipment, as well as in petrochemical, chemical, gas, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, HVAC, and general industries.
The main advantages of plug valves are as follows:
Suitable for frequent operation, quick and lightweight opening and closing.
Low fluid resistance.
Simple structure, relatively small size, light weight, and easy maintenance.
Good sealing performance
The flow direction of the medium can be arbitrary without being limited by the installation direction.
No vibration, low noise.
The installation and maintenance of plug valves should pay attention to the following matters:
Leave a position for the valve handle to rotate
Cannot be used for throttling.
Valves with transmission mechanisms should be installed vertically.
